“The Gates,” an art installation in Central Park, plays an important roll in The Swede/ My Name Is N. In February 2005, Artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude installed 7,503 metal gates in the park, each hung with a saffron-colored flag. The installation remained in place for was just two weeks. I was living in Amherst that winter, and I made a trip to New York to see it.
“The Gates” was inspired by Japanese torii gates, which traditionally mark the entrance of Shinto shrines.
